Founded in 1877 and located in Richmond’s historic Fan District, the city’s oldest hospital is a 227-bed facility with all private rooms at no additional cost. Our concept of patient healthcare offers these important advantages:

The Wound Healing Center & Burn Program are the most comprehensive in Richmond. Retreat is the only hospital in Central Virginia with Hyperbaric Oxygen (HBO) Units that feature painless and highly pressurized oxygen to aid in a patient’s healing. The Burn Program offers a multi-disciplinary approach for patients with an emphasis on rehabilitative services, nutritional support and mental or emotional counseling.

Retreat’s Complex Care Unit is the only program of its kind in the state among acute care hospitals. Designed for patients with catastrophic or multi-trauma injuries with a focus on brain injuries, the Complex Care Program features an above average nurse-to-patient ratio of 1 to 3. The program has outstanding outcomes with 75 percent of patients recovering and progressing to acute rehabilitation or a return to their home environment.

The Women’s Health Unit focuses on the exclusive needs of women beyond obstetrics. We offer a calming and tranquil ambiance, including spa services, to foster relaxation and healing for women after surgery. Through our Colon and Rectal Surgery Program, we're the first and only hospital in the Central Virginia region to offer STARR (Stapled Transanal Rectal Resection), a minimally invasive surgical procedure to treat a type of chronic constipation in women.

Our Endoscopy Unit provides breakthrough sedation techniques that deliver the highest level of comfort and convenience available to patients. Anesthesiologists administer Propofol sedation which is safe, painless and quick-acting allowing patients a faster recovery than with traditional sedation. In addition, the unit includes a minor procedure room for local cases used by plastic surgeons.

The American College of Surgeons Commission on Cancer (CoC) initially approved Retreat Hospital as having a Community Cancer Hospital Program, the highest industry standard, in 1994 and Retreat has received full approval of each survey since then.

Retreat’s Imaging Center has a GE Tesla state-of-the-art scanner that is accredited by the American College of Radiology. The scanner is among the top, fastest scanners in the Richmond area. Our Computed Axial Tomography (CAT) Scanner is also accredited by the American College of Radiology.

Retreat Doctors' Hospital’s Diabetes Lifestyle Program is a recognized program of the American Diabetes Association. The program offers education on diabetes and nutrition to teach patients self management of diabetes.
