Henrico Doctors’ Hospital and UNOS Celebrate the Gift of Life During the Holiday Season

Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, in coordination with UNOS, will honor Living Donors

Richmond, VA, December 7, 2009 – Henrico Doctors’ Hospital, in coordination with UNOS, will honor living organ donors with a recognition ceremony at UNOS on December 10, 2009 at 5:00 p.m.

"Living Donors account for 40 percent of all organ donation," said Gerardo Mendez-Picon, M.D., Medical Director of the Virginia Transplant Center at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital. "This is truly the ultimate gift one person can give to another and it’s only fitting to honor these individuals during this season of giving."

Living donation takes place when a person donates part or all of an organ for transplantation to another person. The ceremony will honor more than 60 individuals and will take place at UNOS, which is located at 400 North 4th Street in Richmond.

The Virginia Transplant Center at Henrico Doctors’ Hospital has been serving the people of Central Virginia and beyond for almost twenty years. They performed their 900th kidney transplant in September.
