Nationally Accredited
The Cancer Center at Henrico Doctors' Hospital is accredited by the American College of Surgeons (ACOS) as a Comprehensive Community Cancer Center. Only one in four hospitals in America has a cancer center with this accreditation. In fact, Henrico Doctors' has received a four-year accreditation, the industry's highest standard, and a rare distinction for a community hospital. The Cancer Center has received the ACOS "Outstanding Achievement Award", a distinction limited to less than 20% of all cancer centers. Our Cancer Program provides the latest treatment options in addition to patient and family support and counseling.
Comprehensive Care
We strive to make the cancer care provided at our center both cutting-edge as well as comprehensive. We focus on prevention, treatment, and follow-up care. Our clinicians provide all levels of care from education and screenings to diagnosis and treatment, from home health and support groups to hospice care and research.
Multi-Disciplinary Team Disease-Specific Clinics
Our patients have access to board-certified surgeons, medical oncologists, and radiation oncologists who provide a consensus of opinion for an individuals treatment plan. Although every treatment plan is developed by experts in cancer care, we never lose sight of the patient and family in the decision-making process.
Breast Cancer Program
Breast Care Nurse Navigators guide patients and families through the maze of tests and specialists. A pre-operative breast surgery class is offered to a patient and their family along with one to one education, camisole fittings and followup after surgery.
Lung Cancer Program
Designed to offer the latest procedures in diagnosis and treatment aimed at quality of life. One to one guidance from the specialized nurse practioner and lung team as patients are offered curative and supportive therapies. Smoking cessation classes, rehabilitative and dietary support and advanced lung disease symptom clinics make a difference in patients' lives.
Treatment Services
Inpatient Care
Our inpatient oncology floors are dedicated units staffed by board-certified oncologists and oncology nurses.
- Medical Oncology Unit
- Surgical Oncology Unit
Radiation Oncology
Our radiation oncology department features state-of-the-art equipment to provide our patients with cutting-edge cancer care. Some of the treatments available include:
Intensity-modulated radiotherapy (IMRT) is a highly conformal treatment technique where high radiation doses are delivered to the tumor while sparing surrounding normal tissues. The treatment plan is customized to sculpt the radiation dose for maximum tumor damage with significantly fewer side-effects.
- Brachytherapy is the use of radioactive sources applied either inside or very close to tumor tissues. Brachytherapy allows the delivery of a very high dose of radiation with very little damage to surrounding normal structures and is most often used to treat cancers of the breast, prostate, and gynecologic organs.
- Accelerated partial breast irradiation typically uses brachytherapy to accomplish radiation treatment for breast cancer in just one week. Traditional radiation therapy for breast cancer involves approximately six weeks of daily external treatments. Patients at Henrico Doctors can be treated with partial breast irradiation using the MammoSite device or with three-dimensional conformal external beam therapy.

What makes the Cancer Program different from other facilities?
The biggest difference is our commitment to quality treatment. From diagnosis through treatment, multiple board certified specialists manage patient care. In fact, we follow every patient who comes to Retreat for the rest of his/her life. To ensure the skills of our staff remain current, we even require that our doctors and nurses participate in continuing oncology medical education. In addition, our nurses are trained and approved through the Oncology Nursing Society program to administer chemotherapy and biotherapy.

Phase One lays the groundwork for effective lymphedema management during daily sessions in a program that lasts approximately four weeks.
Phase Two lets the patient independently manage this long-term condition using the education and strategies learned in Phase One. During this time, physical therapists are available for guidance and support.
